You need to know WHAT type of chemical or dust you need to be protected against. You need to choose the right filter media.... Acid gas? Organic vapor? dust? fibers? etc. etc. How do you know it will fit? The only way to know if it fits is to have a fit test done. (You'll need to find an occupational medicine doctor or other competent person). Medium is the most common size...but there are NO size charts available for respirators.
