MAJOR MANUFACTURERS USE OF ASBESTOS FREE INSULATION HERE!
OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS Mechanical Insulation Systems
Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., Mechanical Division, Fiberglas Tower, Toledo, Ohio 43659 , c.1982
32 page catalog / brochure removed from 1983 catalog shows OWENS-CORNING products: Fiberglas ASJ/SSL-II Pipe Insulation (All Service Jacket/ Double Self Sealing Lap); Owens-Corning Pipe Wrap Insulation; Kaylo 10 Asbestos-Free Pipe Insulation; Industrial Insulation 700 Series Plain & Faced (product # goes from 700 - 705); Fiberglas Insul-Quick Insulation; Thermal Insulating Wool (TIW) Type II; Kaylo 10 Asbestos-Free Block Insulation; Kaylo 10 Asbestos-Free V-Grooved Block Insulation.
The new name for KAYLO products gives ample evidence that previous KAYLO products contained ASBESTOS. The "Asbestos-Free Identity System" is explained- "Kaylo 10 asbestos-free block insulation can be safely used and applied in conformance with OSHA regulations. It has an AF (Asbestos-Free) Identity System to allow for visual identification of the asbestos-free characteristic."
Each product gives Typical Performance Characteristis, Specification Compliance, Application Recommendations (for example, pipes, boilers, merchant vessels etc).
This interesting note is provided on pg 8, "Precautions-operating temperatures above 450F: The phenolic binder contained in all fibrous glass pipe insulation decomposes to some extent at operating temperatures above 350F. Although thermal performance of the insulation is not affected by the loss of binder, certain properties such as compressive strength and resiliency are altered." It then gives recommendations on precautions to take. We know from other literature that PHENOLICs contained ASBESTOS as a filler, but this isn't mentioned in this informative catalog.
The Insul-Quick insulation products "designed for use on power and process boilers, breechings, ducts, precipitators, chimney liners and other heated equipment operating at temperatures up to 950F" is a "light-weight insulation composed of Fiberglas fibers bonded together in a semi-rigid, boardlike form with a special high temperature binder," and complied with ASTM C612 Standard specification for Mineral Fiber Block & Board,Thermal Insulation as well as other specs.
CAUTION is noted on pg 21 "When the insulation is brought up to operating temperature for the first time, some acrid smoke or fumes may be given off. This normally will stop in 24 hrs. Adequate natural ventilation should be used and for enclosed areas, mechanical ventilation is required. If the material must be installed on hot surfaces (above 200F) a full face respirator approved for protection against organic vapors shall be used."
Pg 30 provides the the info that Kaylo 10 should be "finished with a trowel coat of insulating cement, and covered with a jacket suitable for indoor or outdoor application."
Now what do you think the insulating cement contained? They don't tell you here, just recommend its use!
