The central part of the rod is made of ruby and the ends are made of leicosapphire. The ends are not glued or sticked to the ruby part but are intact parts of the laser crystal. The ends are thicker than the rod central part and have 8 mm in diameter. The rod length is 120 mm and the central ruby part diameter is 5.2 mm. The ruby part is 80 mm. End faces are flawless and have no coating. The end faces parallelism is 4 seconds of arc. Perpendicularity of end faces to rod axis is 2 minute of arc. The Chromium content is 0.05%. It does not contain any visible inclusions or bubbles. The rod was manufactured in former Soviet Union about 1987 for a ophthalmic medical laser. A stable material with superior thermal conductivity, ruby combines excellent physical and optical properties with versatile laser performance characteristics. Commercial lamps effectively pump ruby's broad absorption bands to produce a 694.3 nm output, characterized by a long fluorescent lifetime and large energy storage and gain.
