DEMONSTRATIONS OF LARGE MAGNETIC FIELDS:
While rocking a single ROD magnet at 2ft from the surface of a computer CRT monitor evidence of the interacting field exists in the form of a slight rocking of the entire screen. This is done by alternating the poles of the magnet pointing toward the screen. Magnets do not affect LCD screens such as on laptops.
A single magnet moving at a distance of 3ft from a compass will make the needle begin to move and if one of these ROD magnets was left 2ft from a compass on a boat or plane, someone could end up significantly misguided! Be careful about where you store these magnets.
A pair of these thick ROD magnets will hold aggressively through a small adult hand, and should not be placed on either side of a child's hand as the pressure would induce pain. My own hand is small but if I have the pair situated on either side of my hand, through the center of my palm, I can position my hand palm up and begin lifting the magnet off the palm side while still maintaining a "magnetic hold" on the bottom magnet. Although the magnet on the backside of my hand is being pulled straight down by the force of gravity, I can continue to lift the top (palm-side) magnet about 1.5" off the uncompressed surface of my palm before the lower magnet drops away! If you decide to try this demo with two magnets through the hand, it is very important to have a clear, soft, non-ferrous landing spot for the magnet that will drop. If a magnet were to drop from hand height to the floor, you must expect that the bouncing magnet mass will be aggressively looking for something ferrous in the vicinity! Magnetism never sleeps! To us humans as witness, this fact can be impressive in a magical way or can be utilized for relentless service... but the magnet being "always on" can also cause pain and destruction. In a way, these remarkably strong magnets seem almost alive. They are sorta sleeping when ferrous objects aren't nearby but any nearby iron can make the magnets wake up quickly and can move in ways that seem to ignore gravity! This thick size ROD magnet is great for pulling through gaps that are too large for the thinner DISC shaped magnets.
Each ROD magnet can hold up to 31 lbs!
Below is an image of one of these large ROD magnets being tested for magnetic holding strength.
Basically, the test magnet is stuck to the red painted iron at the bottom of the image and to the head of the bolt, which is attached to the spring scale. As the hydraulic jack is pumped the magnetic bond pulls down on the spring scale. This plated ROD magnet tested to 31lbs!
These test results are basically a "best case scenario" for the amount of hold the ROD magnet can have on a thick piece of iron. The weight is being held straight in line with the pulling down force of gravity. Be clear that a magnet stuck vertically on the side of a fridge will only be able to hold a fraction of the weight that it can hold in the horizontal position as indicated in picture of the testing. In a pole to pole or a pole to flat iron surface use of the magnet, such as in my testing setup above, the results are affected more by the surface area of the magnet than by the thickness between the poles. These thick ROD magnets are best utilized for use through gaps, where thinner DISC shapes do not hold well. Sweepers, retrieval tools, ferrous separators, magical illusion, and scientific demonstration of large magnetic fields are all good applications for these large ROD magnets.
These handsome magnets will suffer no loss of magnetic strength from shock or proximity to other strong magnets. They have no need for keepers, which are required for maintaining the charge in alnico horseshoe magnets. Basically, if these magnets are not heated above 176 degrees F, they will prove to be impressively permanent.
It's really fun and educational to tinker with the level of magnetism made available by this new, super-strong, magnet technology. Most of us fondly remember our early magnet experiences. When your first rare earth magnet experience occurs, it may rekindle some of those early experiences, and more!
Magnets bring out the child and the scientist in us!
