To work precise on the mini lathe you need a perfect reference point. You need a Stephan Ferdinand calibration Standard. This is NOT a cheap rusting China made. It is a Stainless Superalloy hand lapped to near perfection by master craftsmen in Costa Rica. Clamp the big side to the chuck and insert the center into the recess. Taste the standard with an indicator sliding it between the two engraved limit marks from left to right. Calibrate you tailstock untill you have the lowest possible differential reading of the indicator. Set the spindle to the lowest speed and run it wile tasting the standard. Read the runout. This is a CYLINDER standard. Meaning that the only true surface is the cylinder between the marks and not the end caps. It is a perfect cylinder within 0.005mm (0.0002") but the diameter is not given. It varies between 8mm min and 10mm max. Length is also irrelevant and varies from 100mm (3.1") minimum to 125mm (3.9") maximum. The shank is between 12.00mm and 13.00mm suitable to be clamped on 1/2" devices (chuck, ER collet, 5C collet and so on). * We have friendly staff to help you out. Don't be shy, ask!
