The basic principle of oeration is Electrostatic Precipitation which is governed by the behavior of small particles in an electrostatic field. If an electrostatic field is introduced across a particle laden gas stream the particles can be collected in a two-step process. The first step is ionization, where the particles acquire a negative charge by differing methods depending upon the size of the particle. The next step is collection, here the particles with a negative charge migrate under the influence of the applied electric field away from a negatively charged electrode and towards the grounded collecting walls where they are trapped and removed by the addition of a fine liquid mist in the gas stream.
