Although suitable for multiple positions and a variety of materials and alloys including stainless steels and aluminum, GMAW and FCAW welding have found a home in high volume welding of plain carbon steels in the flat and horizontal fillet and groove weld positions. GMAW filler materials are of the bare wire variety and require a shielding gas to protect the weld puddle while welding and during solidification. Flux Core filler materials can be of the self-shielding variety omitting the need for shielding gas or can be used with a shielding gas. A variety of shielding gasses are available for use with both GMAW and FCAW. The selection and use of these gasses will affect weld quality, bead appearance, penetration and arc characteristics.
